Dressing Your Child For Winter Outdoor Play
Winter Outdoor Play
As we continue outdoor play during the winter season, we would like to share a reminder about how children should be dressed to stay warm and comfortable outside.
For winter outdoor play, children should wear three internal pieces of clothing, followed by their winter jacket and snow gear. This layering system helps children regulate their body temperature while staying protected from the cold.
1. First Layer – Base Layer
This is worn closest to the skin and helps keep the body warm and dry.
Examples: long-sleeve shirt, thermal top, leggings, or long underwear.
2. Second Layer – Warm Layer
This layer adds extra warmth.
Examples: Terra Viva shirt over the base layer, light fleece top, or warm cotton layer.
3. Third Layer – Sweater or Hoodie
This layer provides insulation before going outside.
Examples: Terra Viva sweater, hoodie, fleece pullover, or cardigan.
Outer Layer (for outdoors):
- Winter jacket
- Snow pants
- Hat, mittens, neck warmer
- Waterproof winter boots
Important reminders:
- Please label all winter clothing with your child’s name. Support our fundraiser by purchasing new labels here!

- Extra mittens and socks are strongly encouraged.
- Children who are not dressed in all required layers may need to have a shortened outdoor time for comfort and safety.
Proper layering allows children to enjoy outdoor play safely while staying warm and active. Thank you for your cooperation and support in keeping our outdoor routines positive during the winter months.
